Rest has always been a great way to recharge the spirit, especially if you?ve spent several weeks working long, intense hours. I spent much of the first five months of this year on the road working so I really enjoyed that part of my slow time that allowed me to catch up on some rest.

But once I had sufficiently rested, I took on a big and very unique project here at my house replacing all our windows. Never done anything like that before in my life, but the fact of having this new, manual labor task was very invigorating for me. I?ve always enjoyed fixing things around the house but to do it on this scale was thrilling and engaging in ways I don?t use very often in my work. Once that was done, I found myself very inspired to jump back into my work to begin a new cycle of planting and harvesting.

I looked over at the sound man in the middle of the set and he sat with a fan, trying to blow some life into the overheating PA. This is the kind of set you come to Japan to hear music for.

Everyone always asks facetiously, why is Japanese music so cool? Well, this is why. For one thing it’s the volume. It’s a form of meditation that can only be learned by experiencing. And, it’s not polite to walk out on a show in Japan.

Take the assault, let it batter you in a way you didn’t feel was possible. Let the sound drive you to a place you’ve never been. And then, in the middle of it, float outside your body, forget where you are, explore the ether. And when you settle back into your body and realize where you’ve been, that you forgot about the music and the place and the time, laugh your ass off and dig the sounds that blew your corporeal body to bits and left only your mind, floating, timeless, like Japan, one thousand years old.

Police seek help in fire investigation

0 Comments | Republican & Herald; Pottsville, Pa., Nov 8, 2009 | by FRANK ANDRUSCAVAGE

NEW PHILADELPHIA — Schuylkill County Crimestoppers and state police at Frackville are asking for the public’s help in finding those responsible for starting a fire that destroyed a borough tavern on Oct. 17.

Flames gutted Moe’s Pub at 57 Water St. and also damaged two adjoining row homes at 53 and 55 Water St., state police at Frackville said.

A state police fire marshal determined that the 2:50 a.m. blaze was intentionally set and ruled the cause as arson.

After the fire, the building was broken into twice and quantities of liquor were stolen each time, troopers said.

Those responsible pried open a boarded-up doorway on the Wiggan Street side of the building to gain entrance, troopers said.

Fire officials said the massive blaze was lit only about 20 minutes after the last patrons left Moe’s for the night.

Schuylkill County Crimestoppers will pay up to $1,000 for information leading to the identification those responsible for this fire or on any other crime in Schuylkill County.

Callers are asked to refer to incident number 11-08-09 when calling about the arson in New Philadelphia.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crimestoppers, toll- free, at 877-TIPS4SC (877-847-7472)

If there are errors on your reports they could work against you, therefore it is important to explain these errors to the creditor and contact the credit reporting bureaus to fix the problem.

Expect to Learn Patience ? With a less than stellar credit rating, you will have to gain patience in order to be able to withstand the possible rejections coming your way. If you are turned down by one lender, consider going to another lender and applying for a loan with them. Chances are you?ll be better equipped the second time around, but you may have to do some additional explaining with them such as why you were recently turned down for a loan.

Many lending decisions are based upon things you cannot immediately change such as your past credit and current financial condition. However, by meeting with a lender face to face you stand a better chance of being approved for a loan than obtaining a loan from someone who isn?t known to you.

And in business, time is money.

And in business, time is money. We all agree to that, but what do we seem to have the least of? And what can we do about it….

If you only had half the hours in your week, what work would you feel took priority? How would you be able to do just those things and still have time left to get on with other priorities?

This week the challenge is to let go of some to the ‘stuff’ that gets in your way. And better, to stop doing much of what you do – especially if it is someone else’s agenda.

Time to pass the buck that has been so handily passed to you, back to the giver – with thanks!

Work is all about behaviours. Over time, our own behaviours take on a life of their own. They are not who we truly want to be (nor where we perform our best) and we get all uncomfortable with how those behaviours dictate our time. It truly is like forcing a square peg into a round hole – can you feel that pressure?

To get round this you need to take a look at all the things that are getting in the way of doing and effective and efficient job.

Sometimes this means getting out of the nice-to-do-but-a-bit-of-a-waste-of-time things – your ‘comfort-blanket’ things that keep you busy, if unproductive.

Sepsis ALERT

Recognition and treatment of a common killer

Before her tragic death, nothing about Mariana Bridi da Costa’s remarkable life had been surprising.

Her rise to fame in the world modeling and pageant communities was really no surprise – she was strikingly beautiful. In 2006, she had been voted one of the four most beautiful faces in the world. And nobody was surprised when she placed fourth at the 2008 Miss World pageant in Brazil.

The surprise didn’t begin until January 2009, when Mariana was admitted to the hospital for complications from a recent bladder infection. The surprises continued later that month when it was announced that doctors would remove her hands and feet in a desperate attempt to save her life. Surprise turned to shock on January 24, when it was announced that Mariana da Costa, the rising Brazilian star, was dead at the age of 20 from multiple organ failure.1 The underlying culprit was septic shock.2 Thousands attended the funeral, each asking some form of the same question: “How could such a thing happen?”

AT WAR WITH SEPSIS

In truth, Mariana’s case is neither rare nor isolated. The Mayo Clinic reports treating about 100 severe sepsis cases each year in otherwise young, healthy individuals. On average, one in four will die.3 Those numbers increase rapidly when we start adding at-risk patient populations to the equation. The very young, very old, those with recent surgeries, invasive procedures or illnesses and those with depressed immune systems have far greater infection and mortality rates.

Nationwide, American hospitals are expected to treat approximately one million cases of severe sepsis in 2010. Of those patients, 30% will die within one month of diagnosis. An additional 20% will succumb over the next five months.4-* By the time you finish reading this article, five more patients will have lost their lives to sepsis.

That mortalily rate is comparable to those of lung and breast cancer combined. It’s also on par with the 28-day mortality rates of patients suffering acute myocardial infarctions in I960.7 While the world medical establishment has attacked the AMI patient population with research, education and technology, sepsis remains a silent killer.

It’s also getting worse. Sepsis rates are predicted to rise at a rate of 15% a year. That will mean an additional million cases in the U.S. alone by 2020.8 But the silent killer at the bedside also presents a unique and exciting challenge to caregivers.

The story of sepsis isn’t all bad news. It’s also a story of doctors looking for unique assessment tools to identify septic patients early. It’s a story of aggressive treatment regimens that are showing promising results. And now it’s a story that has come to the prehospital arena.

When emergency room physician Wayne Guerra, MD, was tasked with standardizing in-hospital treatment of sepsis patients across the Adventist Division of the Centura Health hospital group in Colorado, he teamed up with John Riccio, MD, the local EMS medical director, to create a unique addition to area prehospital protocols: a one-of-akind prehospital sepsis alert program.

The goal of the program is simple enough. “First we need to decide if we can identify these patients in the field,” Riccio explains. “If we can’t identify them, it’s going to be hard to say we’re making a difference. Second, does [identifying the sepsis patient] make a difference in their length of stay, complications, mortality, eta?” It’s a compelling question. But before we can address it, we need to answer an even more fundamental inquiry.

WHAT IS SEPSIS?

Part of the challenge of addressing sepsis research and education is the lack of a dear answer to the question “What is sepsis?” Thankfully, the medical establishment is getting closer to a consensus. This lack of clear identification and treatment guidelines is part of the ongoing fight to reduce sepsis mortality

These numbers are simple a general guideline to follow when determining if you are drinking too much. Things that can easily affect these numbers are tolerance, body mass, and diet.

If you can say that you are over those numbers, the next step is to realize that you might be drinking heavily and putting yourself at risks with alcohol. If you are a woman and are averaging more than 21 drinks per week, or a man averaging over 35 drinks per week, chances are you are drinking heavily and are putting yourself at great danger. Dangerous things that can happen as a result of heavy drinking are: Drinking and Driving, Fetal alcohol syndrome, change in mood?s, dependence on Alcohol, and liver problems among several other things.

If you feel that you are a heavy drinker, or that alcohol is becoming a problem in your life, you should be bold and contact a physician immediately to take the necessary steps to control the problem before it gets out of hand.

Business groups make energy pitch

0 Comments | Chattanooga Times Free Press, Jul 22, 2010 | by Flessner, Dave

The leaders of Chattanooga’s growing clean energy industry urged U.S. senators this week to give them a boost by adopting legislation that sets a price on heat-trapping carbon emissions and offers help for alternative energy sources.

But with less than two weeks left on the Senate’s summer schedule before this fall’s elections, the prospects of a major energy bill this year appear to be losing steam.

“Unfortunately, I just don’t think that energy legislation is going to be addressed this year, ” U.S. Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., a member of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, said Wednesday night.

Senate Democrats will huddle today to plot what, if any, energy bill they may try to bring to the Senate floor for a vote next week. Republicans have vowed to fight climate change legislation that includes a cap and trade provision like the one adopted in a House energy package a year ago by a 219-212 vote.

“Cap and trade will raise the cost of energy to all Georgians, the majority of whom get their electricity from coal-fired electric plants,” said U.S. Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga.

Despite opposition to the House-approved cap and trade energy bill by the National Association of Manufacturers and other business groups, growing Tennessee energy businesses such as Alstom Power, Signal Energy, Aerisyn and Hemlock Semi-Conductor say they would benefit from such legislation
